Contemporary art spaces prioritize flexibility. Exhibitions frequently utilize entire wall surfaces for salon-style hangs or massive single works. Point-source spots fail here. They create hot spots. Wall wash systems solve this geometry problem.
Asymmetrical Optics
Standard lenses push light straight out. Wall washers use asymmetrical reflectors and lenses. They kick light downward and backward simultaneously. The top of the wall receives a softer beam to prevent burn-out, while the bottom of the wall receives the high-intensity center beam. Distance normalizes the lux levels.
- Setback: Distance from the wall. Typically 1/3 of the ceiling height. A 4m ceiling requires a 1.3m setback.
- Spacing: Distance between fixtures. Equals the setback dimension. 1.3m spacing produces a seamless wash.
- Uniformity Ratio: Max lux to min lux. Target is 3:1 or better across the vertical plane.
Form Factors
Linear tracks accept specific wash units. Some are rectangular slabs mimicking the track profile. Others are cylindrical heads fitted with directional snoots and spread lenses. Recessed linear extrusions exist for permanent architectural integration, though they sacrifice curatorial flexibility.
Pros and Cons
Pros: Flawless vertical uniformity. Excellent for murals, tapestries, and salon hangs. Reduces glare since light bounces off the wall, acting as indirect ambient illumination for the room.
Cons: High energy consumption compared to targeted spots. Washes out adjacent spaces. Flattens three-dimensional textures on oil paintings. Reveals wall imperfections (requires Level 5 drywall finish).
| Ceiling Height | Optimal Setback | Fixture Spacing |
|---|---|---|
| 3.0 meters | 1.0 meters | 1.0 meters |
| 4.0 meters | 1.3 meters | 1.3 meters |
| 5.0 meters | 1.6 meters | 1.6 meters |
| 6.0 meters | 2.0 meters | 2.0 meters |
Wall washing acts as the base layer of gallery lighting. Spots highlight. Washers establish the ambient field. They run at 30-50% capacity via DALI control, leaving headroom for future brightness degradation over a 50,000-hour lifespan.
